When people think of role-playing games, they tend to think of strictly imagination and no equipment. While it is true that role-playing games use a lot of imagination, it is not true that it only requires imagination. There are different levels of role-playing games that require different levels of imagination.
The classic role-playing game that most people have heard of is Dungeons & Dragons, commonly known as D&D. D&D is a collaborative storytelling game driven by imagination. One person narrates (the Dungeon Master) and everyone else plays a main character. The Dungeon Master’s (DM) role is to give structure to the story to allow adventurers to determine what actions they take. Adventurers in D&D must roll dice to determine whether their actions are allowed or not. Anything is possible in a game of D&D, but the dice have the final say in what outcomes are more probable. There are no winners or losers in D&D, at least not in the way most people understand it. A group may fail an adventure, but as long as the story was memorable and everyone had a good time, it’s a win.
A mid-level role-playing game would be something like the Quiet Year. In the Quiet Year the goal is to build something within the quiet year after the collapse of civilization. Every decision and action is set against a backdrop of dwindling time and rising concern. All that’s needed is the game itself, of course, and a regular deck of cards. The cards correspond to a week during the quiet year. There are good things, bad things, and sudden changes in luck.
You’ll know the game has ended when the Frost Shepherds come. This type of game is meant for those who like physical board games, but want something different that allows them to use their imagination at least a little bit.
There are many role playing games out there for different levels of interest. We recommend using any type of search engine (Google, Bing, etc.) to search for the various levels of role playing games out there to see if there is one that suits your needs!
