Outdoor games are so fun. I grew up playing games like tag, hide and seek, red rover, swing the statue and red light green light. All of these were played with just people. There was no need for props, just lots of other kids. So here’s how you play some of these old school outside games.
Tag was pretty simple as well. You choose a person to be “It”. The person that was chosen has to try and catch someone else to be “It”. So everyone is running around trying not to get caught. There was usually a safe zone. We would make it the gate on the fence or anything that was in the backyard. So if you made it to the safe zone, you couldn’t be tagged. If you tagged someone new, the game continues and people in the safe zone are in play again.
I think everyone has played hide and seek at some point in their life. You choose someone to do the counting and decide on how high to count. Some people do a count of 10, others do more. You also decide on where the home base will be. The person counting covers their eyes and starts counting. While they are counting the other players go and hide. Once the counting is done the counter goes to look for the other players. At this point the other players have the opportunity to run to home base. If they are caught by the counter, they are out. If the other players make it to home base. They are safe.
Red rover, red rover let (insert name here) come over. In red rover, you choose 2 teams, form two rows and face each other. One team is chosen to go first. The chosen team then links arms together, or holds hands really tightly. They then decide on a person from the other team and call for them. Red rover, red rover let Karen come over. Karen then runs towards the arms of the other team and tries to break through. If they can not break through the arms of the chosen team, they are then on that team. However, if they do break through, they get to bring someone back to their team. But it will have to be one of the two people where they broke the link.
Swing the statues was easy. One person was the swinger and the rest were the statues. The swinger would take your hand and would swing you around and let you go. However you landed, you had to freeze in that position and you became the statue. The swinger then chooses a winner. Pretty simple game.
Red light, green light was fun. Set up your start line and your finish line. Choose someone to be the light and then everyone else will go to the starting line. When you say green light and everyone moves forward. When you say red light everyone must stop. If they continue to move after you say stop, they have to go back to the starting line. The round is over when everyone is over the finish line. Seems like when we played as kids we would turn when you said red light. So you would face away from the players when it was green light and turn to catch them when you said red light.
I know as kids we played these games a lot. They were a lot of fun and helped us get some pent up energy out. They took time and friends and that’s all you needed to have some fun.
