Board Games

windsorandnikkel

I was raised in a large family so playing board games was one of the things we did as a family that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. The one problem we suffered from was that we usually had pieces missing or, if it was things like Yahtzee, we didn’t have the score pages. Even with these challenges, we always managed to play and have fun.

I remember playing Monopoly, Sorry, Clue, Yahtzee, Checkers, and Chinese Checkers. One of my favorite games then was Clue. I was pretty young and rarely won because I didn’t understand the strategy of the game.

Clue is a pretty simple game in theory. The game board has nine rooms on it, six characters, and six weapons. The rooms are the Study, Kitchen, Ballroom, Conservatory, Billiard Room, Library, Hall, Lounge, Dining Room, and Cellar. The characters are Miss Scarlet, Mrs. White, Mrs. Peacock, Professor Plum, Mr. Green, and Colonel Mustard. The weapons are Revolver, Dagger, Lead Pipe, Rope, Candle Stick, and Wrench. There are also corresponding cards for rooms, weapons, and characters. The object of the game is to figure out the killer, what they used for a weapon, and where they murdered their victim.

Before the game starts you pull one card from each category and place it in the predictions envelope. These cards should not be seen by anyone who is actually playing the game. The remainder of the cards are shuffled and passed out among the players. Now it’s time to choose your character by selecting the pawn that matches your character's color. For example, Miss Scarlett is the red pawn, Colonel Mustard is the yellow pawn, and so on. Now take your cards and mark them on your scorecard.

Pawns are then placed in the center of the board which is a staircase. There are a pair of dice that determine how far you move. Pawns can be moved in any direction to match the numbers on the dice. If you have rolled a high enough number to make it to one of the rooms you can make a prediction. Predictions are how you figure out what happened.

I know that different people have different strategies but I will share mine with you now. Once I get my cards, I mark them on my scorecard. This is a sheet of paper with all of your people, weapons, and rooms on it. So if I have the lead pipe, I will mark that on this paper. When I get to a room to make a prediction, I will use things I already have in my hand. As an example; I am in the ballroom but I don’t have the ballroom card, I will use a character I have in my hand as well as a weapon I am holding that way if no one shows me the ballroom, then I know the ballroom is the room the murder happened. From there I will work on the weapon and the murderer. When I think I have it right I will tell people that I think it is solved. At that point, I will pick up the envelope and look at the three cards inside. If I am correct the game is over. However, if I am incorrect, I return the card to the envelope and the game continues but I can no longer play.

Clue is a great game for kids and adults alike. Now, there are many different editions of Clue. The gameplay is pretty much the same but the theme is different. Some of those games are Star Wars Edition Clue, Clue: Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead Clue Game, The Big Bang Theory Clue, Clue: Harry Potter Edition and so many more. So if you’ve never played this classic game then head on out and pick one up. You won’t regret it! Hours of fun for the entire family.
